"Book clubs are a great place to discuss not only a book's content, but how that subject impacts our thoughts, our lives, our choices, our feelings.  The author's fascinating journey as a surrogate mother in her book DELIVERING HOPE gave our book club the chance to explore feelings and thoughts….and to appreciate life's many gifts. I'd highly recommend it to any book club!"

A Look Inside.........

me & my cousin henry in the '70's

Book Anecdote (P.89)................
A few days later back at home, Duncan’s kindergarten teacher asked the children to create a family drawing in class.  When Duncan extracted the slightly crumpled drawing assignment from the bottom of his backpack that evening, we sat down on the couch together to admire it, and I asked him to explain the mysterious identity of each of the colorful stick figures standing at attention on the paper.

He proudly identified himself and then each of his sisters, all drawn according to relative size. He pointed out Daddy, the tall one smiling lopsidedly, and me, sporting round eyes and a few strands of haphazard yellow hair, looking like a frightened scarecrow. Dominating my portrait, however, appeared thick black crayon marks boldly drawn across my middle. Curious, I inquired of Duncan as to the nature of those strange markings.

“Oh.  That’s my baby cousin, Mommy!” he answered.

“Is that what you told Ms. Warren?” I asked hesitantly.

“Yep!” he proudly confirmed.

Oh no.  Lucy you got some splainin’ to do!

While our children had quickly and enthusiastically embraced their cousin-to-be, we had not yet enlightened their teachers with the details of my surrogate pregnancy, and I worried that Duncan’s explanation of his drawing had seriously startled Ms. Warren, a sweet, energetic young woman in her second year of teaching kindergarten.

Book Excerpt  (p.67).......
We scheduled babysitting arrangements for the kids for Labor Day weekend well in advance, so that Robert and I could travel up to Pasadena together for the big event. When that first Thursday in September arrived, we packed our weekend bags (including the ever-present syringes and hormones) and embraced the kids in tender hugs goodbye.
“I hope you get a baby, Mommy,” Duncan said.
    “Good luck!” Kellie said.

And closing the garage door behind us that afternoon, we at last motored down the street toward the freeway to Los Angeles for the much anticipated transfer.

Quiet at first on the ride up in the car, Robert and I were both feeling anxious (anxious-nervous as well as anxious-excited) about the prospect of beginning the journey of a surrogate pregnancy with Henry and Lauren. The stakes were high for all of us.

“I can’t believe we’re actually doing this.  This is your last chance to back out,” Robert joked lightly.

“Very funny, honey,” I responded, raising my eyebrows in sarcasm.

But the truth was, he was right. This was it. There would be no backing out after I accepted their embryo into my body.  Not that I wanted to, nor had I ever seriously reconsidered my offer, but this step made it all of a sudden so real, so present, so NOW.  All the preparations we had made and all the steps we had taken on our journey so far had committed me more to our agreement, our relationship, and our partnership. I did not find myself hesitating now, but the idea that we were actually at the critical point of realization still managed to take my breath away.

Here are just a few Questions I have responded to at several group meetings:

1.  Did you ever, even once for a brief moment, wish that you could keep the baby?
2.  What was the most unexpected consequence of surrogacy?
3.  Did you have to convince your husband to proceed with the surrogacy?
3.  Would you ever offer to be a surrogate again?
4.  Do you talk to Hope about carrying her inside of you?  Does she know about the book?
5.  How did the surrogacy change you?
